General News - the last liberty ships

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

One of three remaining Liberty Ships in the US inventory may soon be bound for Greece under a deal signed today at the Posidonia exhibition in Athens. Under the Memorandum of Understanding between the US Maritime Administration and the Greek government, a formal process will now begin to transfer the Arthur M Huddell to Piraeus as a museum ship next to the old battleship Averof of 1912.

Safmarine Container Lines last week named its second post-Panamax 6,160-TEU container vessel in South Korea. The  Safmarine Komati, will join sister-ship Safmarine Kariba, named in April, on a joint Europe/Middle East/India service with A.P. Moller which Safmarine calls Prime Express. The company refers to the two 84,775-deadweight ton vessels as the "Safmarine Mega Whites" because of their size and white hulls. Unfortunately I don’t think we will be seeing these ships at Southampton.

General News - ‘great whites’ replaced with ‘mega whites’

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

The older of you will remember the four old Safmarine container ships that once visited Southampton, affectionately known as the ‘great whites’.  I thought they were up  for disposal but apparently Safmarine/Maersk are still running some

During the month of June two nuclear powered Submarines are planned to visit Portsmouth Harbour. The first of the planned visits is the USS Jacksonville on the 9th. The second will take place between the 9th & 12th June. The one on the 9th is the USS Jacksonville. The picture shows her when she was here in 1984.

The aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious heads up the list of ships which have committed to Meet Your Navy in Portsmouth in July. Illustrious will be open to visitors throughout the three days of the event at Portsmouth Naval Base from July 25 – 27. Her recent mission to the Indian Ocean is attracting more than 1.5 million viewers on the weekly Warship programme screened on Monday evenings. She will be joined at Meet Your Navy by seven other RN ships also open to visitors: Type 42 destroyer HMS Gloucester; Type 22 frigate HMS Campbeltown, Type 23 frigates HMS Argyll, Westminster, and Richmond; minehunter HMS Hurworth and survey vessel HMS Enterprise. They will be joined by one of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s newest vessels – the landing ship Largs Bay. Foreign naval vessels so far confirmed are Japanese warships Kashima (training ship), Asagiri (patrol craft) and Umigiri (destroyer), and the French coastal patrol ship Flamant. Denmark has committed a Thetis-class frigate and the Brazilian Navy is sending sail training ship Cisne Branco.

Coast guards in the UK are planning to stage longer strikes this summer as their campaign for higher pay intensifies. Their union, the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS), has begun consulting members employed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) on a series of strikes lasting longer than 24 hours.

Zim changes schedules

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd EAST WEST EXPRESS (EWX) service will be moving to Southampton Container Terminal (SCT). Whilst Tilbury Container Terminal (TCS) have served Zim well, it has been necessary due to enhancements on the service to relocating to ensure the longevity of a UK call is maintained. The current vessel capacity of 4,250 TEU per vessel will be replaced in 2009 by 8-10,000 TEU ships and is developing this growth through Southampton Container Terminal (SCT) in the forthcoming years. With the reconfiguration of the service Zim has now been able to include Rotterdam as the first port in North Europe therefore offering greater feedering capabilities / quicker transit times. Zim will also continue to offer space via our slot charter agreement on the weekly AEX service into Felixstowe. The following is the new rotation, with Shanghai/Southampton approx 30 days.
